Snr Process Engineer (Industrial Biotechnology)

Abercorn Sinclair is delighted to present this exciting opportunity with our industry partner MiAlgae based in Edinburgh.

Founded in 2016, MiAlgae applies leading advances in science and technology to improve food security and reduce the impact of humanity on the planet. The company aims to eliminate reliance on wild-caught fish as a source of omega-3 by harnessing the potential of microalgae as a sustainable and rich alternative source. MiAlgae’s zero-waste solution recycles co-products from food and drink production to grow Omega-3-rich micro-algae, returning clean water in the process.

The role:

Reporting to the Head of Engineering you will work closely with the Technical Development and R&D departments to scale up MiAlgae’s processes. You will provide full process engineering input from front-end engineering design (FEED), detailed design, construction, and commissioning while also working with a diverse workgroup of vendors, executive managers, subcontractors, consultants, and other professionals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work alongside sub-contractors to design, construct, and commission MiAlgae’s Phase 2 production site.
  • Lead allocated process development and trials focussing on process optimisation.
  • Consult with EPC contractors to facilitate the production of detailed design packages.
  • Work with partners and the wider team to deliver the overall project.
  • Develop new process technology by working closely with our R&D Scientists and the Engineering team.
  • Support Site Operations and lead in root cause analysis investigations.
  • Any gaps identified and actioned.

Experience and Skills:

  • Proven experience in managing Capex multi-disciplinary projects in complex environments.
  • Experience in plant and process optimisation.
  • Experience developing engineering packages including preparation/checking of heat and mass balances, process specifications, P&ID development and process safety design.
  • Thorough knowledge of plant design, capital projects process and commissioning.
  • Highly developed practical process engineering skills.
  • Ability to prioritise personal workload to achieve deadlines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in working with MS Excel, MS Word, and MS Project.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a multi-disciplined team.
  • Experience in the following would be desirable but not essential; pasteurisation/sterilisation, cooling systems, anaerobic fermentation.

The Candidate:

We seek driven individuals with a flexible approach to work and eager to make their mark within a rapidly growing, award-winning biotechnology company.

The ideal candidate will be a Chartered Engineer, or working towards Chartership and educated to BEng/MEng level in chemical process engineering or related technical discipline. You will have several years of demonstrable industry experience from a similar design and manufacturing environment. Individuals who have significant process/plant design experience would be highly desirable.

You will be an effective communicator with the ability to work independently and effectively within a team.

You will have a positive ‘can do’ approach and a keen interest in the use of biotechnology for the benefit of the environment.

The opportunity:

For the right individual, this is an amazing opportunity to join an exciting young, scaling biotech where you will play a critical role in developing their process technology and future products.

In return, you can expect a competitive salary + benefits and the opportunity to work with a team truly committed to developing scalable, sustainable solutions.
